Utah County hard water · Cost guide
How much does a water softener cost?
National cost guides put a professionally installed salt-based (ion-exchange) softener at about $1,200–$3,800, with a $2,500 national average (HomeGuide). Angi puts the typical install around $1,500. These are national figures — we haven’t found a published Utah County price survey, so get a quote sized to your tested hardness.
Installed price by system type
HomeGuide’s installed-price ranges by type:
- Salt-based / ion exchange: $1,200–$3,800
- Dual-tank ion exchange: $1,700–$5,000
- Salt-free (conditioner): $1,500–$4,500
- Whole-house reverse osmosis: $4,800–$10,000
Equipment vs. installation labor
Angi lists equipment-only prices by capacity — for example $400–$1,000 for a 32,000-grain unit and $600–$1,200 for a 48,000-grain unit — and installation labor of $150–$1,000 depending on the unit and how complex the job is.
HomeGuide notes that homes with an existing softener loop need less plumbing work, while adding a drain line, rerouting the water line, or adding a dedicated electrical circuit raises the cost. Many newer Utah County homes have a loop already; see our Saratoga Springs softener-loop guide.
Running costs
HomeGuide estimates salt or potassium at $50–$150 a year and maintenance at $100–$300+ a year. Angi prices a 40-pound bag of softener salt at $5–$10 and potassium chloride at $50–$70 a bag.
What moves the price in Utah County
Hardness drives capacity. Provo’s 2025 report lists 10–15 grains per gallon and Orem’s 2026 report lists 7–25; Saratoga Springs publishes an 8.3 gpg average; Lehi’s 2025 report lists no hardness. Harder water and bigger households need more capacity, which costs more.
Install complexity is the other big lever: whether there’s a loop, a drain, and an outlet near the main line.
Common questions
- How much does it cost to install a water softener?
- HomeGuide puts a salt-based softener at $1,200–$3,800 installed, with a $2,500 national average. Angi puts the typical install around $1,500 and labor alone at $150–$1,000. Utah County quotes depend mostly on capacity and whether your house has a softener loop.
- Is a salt-free system cheaper?
- Not usually up front: HomeGuide lists salt-free systems at $1,500–$4,500 installed versus $1,200–$3,800 for salt-based. Salt-free units skip salt costs, but they don’t remove hardness.
- How much does a water softener cost to run each year?
- HomeGuide estimates $50–$150 a year for salt or potassium plus $100–$300+ a year for maintenance.
