Highland hard water · Water softeners · Groundwater
Highland says its water runs about 14 grains.
That’s from Highland City’s own water-hardness page (undated). The city’s 2025 water quality report doesn’t list hardness. At 14 grains per gallon, spots and scale are expected without a softener.
Highland
All groundwater, and the city puts a number on it.
Highland’s 2025 water quality report says all of the city’s drinking water comes from groundwater. Groundwater dissolves calcium and magnesium from the rock it moves through, and Highland City’s own water-hardness page puts the result at about 14 grains per gallon. That page isn’t dated and the 2025 report doesn’t list hardness, so we label it as the city’s figure. At that level most homes see film on glasses, crust on faucets, and scale in the water heater without a softener.
Bigger homes on bigger lots usually mean more water use — size the softener to household use and a tap test, not just the city number.
Why Utah County water is this hard
Where we have a city report, we cite it. Where we don’t, we say so.
Provo runs 10–15 grains (2025 CCR). Orem swings 7–25 (2026 CCR). Lehi’s 2025 city water report doesn’t list hardness, so we don’t have a city number. Vendors cite around 11 grains (2024, not a city figure) — we test your tap before sizing anything. Saratoga Springs publishes a culinary-water average of 142 ppm / 8.3 gpg as CaCO₃ — moderately hard, milder than Provo or Orem. That’s the city’s own number; its 2025 water quality report doesn’t list hardness.

What we actually do
Softener and scale are the front door.
General plumbing rides behind that. We are not trying to be every plumber listing in Highland. We are the hard-water page.
Water softener
Put it on before scale becomes a repair — especially in a new build.
Scale & hard water
White crust on fixtures, lines, and glass. A local installer pulls it out.
Water heater
Rides behind the softener. We don’t lead every city with a dead tank.
